HIKO recommends the use of a hard teat to achieve the slowest possible drinking. This stimulates the sucking reflex and reduces mutual suckling. In addition, the calf salivates more. The saliva produced by slow suckling has natural antimicrobial properties to boost immunity. Saliva balances the pH value in the abomasum so that the milk can thicken. The slow absorption of milk in combination with saliva gives chymosin and other enzymes time to break down the milk, lipase digests fats, lactose is digested and absorbed into the bloodstream. This leads to better digestion and correspondingly positive development of the calves.
